Automations
5 automations worth setting up first
If your smart home is an app full of switches, these five make it run itself.

The five
- Lights follow the sun: porch and hallway lights on at sunset, off at bedtime. No timers to reset when the clocks change. Kit: a smart bulb or plug and a hub.
- Laundry's done: an energy-monitoring plug sees the washer drop to near zero watts and sends your phone a message. Kit: one energy-monitoring plug.
- Last one out, all off: when the last phone leaves home, lights and plugs switch off and the heating drops. Kit: phones with the hub app and smart plugs.
- Door left open: back door or freezer open for 5 minutes? You get an alert. Kit: one contact sensor.
- Good morning scene: blinds open, lights fade up, the coffee machine plug turns on. Kit: smart plug, bulbs, optional blind motor.
Safety first
Only automate appliances that are safe to switch remotely, and run washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers while you're home and awake.
Safety: London Fire Brigade advises: don't leave the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher on overnight and unattended.
