Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread or Matter: which one to buy?

The four names on every smart-home box, explained in plain English, with what to pick for each device.

Updated 4 October 2026

Wi-Fi

Connects straight to your router, so no hub is needed. The catch: lots of Wi-Fi devices can crowd a router, and Wi-Fi drains batteries fast. Best for plugs, cameras and appliances.

Zigbee

A low-power mesh: plugged-in Zigbee devices pass the signal along, so range grows as you add more. It needs a hub or a USB coordinator, and there is a huge choice of cheap sensors that last months on a coin cell.

Thread

A newer low-power mesh, like Zigbee, but it speaks the same internet language (IP) as the rest of your network. It needs a Thread border router; some smart speakers, hubs and TV boxes have one built in, so check the spec sheet.

Matter is not a radio

Matter is a shared language. Matter devices run over Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet and work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. Control stays local, and one device can join several apps at once.

What to pick

  • Sensors: Zigbee or Matter over Thread.
  • Plugs: Matter over Wi-Fi, or Zigbee.
  • Cameras: Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Always: check which hub or border router it needs.

Already own Zigbee? Keep it.

Home Assistant runs Zigbee, Thread and Matter side by side, so nothing has to be thrown away.
